China has a long tradition of some very fine artwork that has astounded people from other parts of the world. One of the artwork that has gained popularity in the past two decades are the painted snuff bottles.
I have seen a documentary that revealed the intricate work involved in producing these type of tiny bottles. For one thing, the artist needs a long brush which comes with a fishing hook style tip. Then, he inserts the brush very gingerly into the neck of the bottle and let go of his creative talent.
If you think you can manage such a hobby, you are welcome to try. But if you don’t have a sifu to teach you how to do it, you will need a lot of patience.
Surprisingly, there are bottles such as the above that do not cost that much. One reason is because China has thousands of such bottle painters. Only the very best can earn top dollar with their artwork. That just goes to show that being an artist doesn’t mean that you will be rich in a short time.
Next time, you come across bottles such as these, think of the long hours and strained eyes that contribute signficantly to these kind of artwork.
