Natural splendour in the line of vision October 8, 2008

Have you ever hung around the base of a tree and wonder what’s it’s all about? Trees, rocks, waterfalls, dead leaves and undergrowth all denote one thing – that life has a force that is unstoppable. Nothing can stop growth.
The tree you spied on in your teenage years now grows 30ft tall. The small bush that you used to run circles around in, is so big now that you are told snakes have been sighted on its branches.
Such is the luxuriant nature of trees, grass, leaves and trunks. It is a personal habit to hang around tall trees. I often wonder why am I so fascinated by the intricate patterns of leaves and the sunlight shining through them.
One fine day when you really have nothing better to do, you should park yourself under an impressive canopy of three branches and soad in the sight when your eyes are cast upwards.
Perhaps you will be able to see what I have already a glimpse of. And that is that the foliage that surrounds us also gives a certain energy to the enviornment which we constantly abused and misued.
May one day, more of us will learn to appreciate the little green gifts that are laid out before us on the table of life.
Goodbye to that chinatown shop October 5, 2008

For years, a number of Chinatown shoppers have been discreetly visiting and patronising this unassuming shoplot in Petaling Street which went by the name of “Little Chinatown.”
From the facade, it didn’t look like much but upon entering and through further inspection, one would be amazed by the range of items it sells. Actually, Little Chinatown deals in bulk sales but due to its regular walk-in customers, it also caters to the individual buyers.
Thus, a number of discerning shoppers, including yours truly, have been shopping on the quiet at this place. The selfish personal policy is “don’t tell anyone!” because otherwise, the items will be snapped up double-quick.
Because of its wholesale prices, items are usually about 60 per cent cheaper than in the ordinary retail shops. However all that came to an end at the end of August 2008 when Little Chinatown, due to strategic and financial considerations, decided to shift back to its Hq in Sungai Besi (where there’s no individual sales policy).
What a letdown! For me, especially but not to worry, I still have five cupboardfuls of “toys” and other stuff to play around with. Those will last me for at least two years.
