Masjid Jamek was considered the main mosque in the capital Kuala Lumpur until 1965. That was the year, the national mosque, Masjid Negara, was completed.

Masjid Negara is situated near the old central Railway Station. In the 1850s, tin miners travelled up Klang river to unload their equipment and provisions at this confluence of two rivers. They would later travel up the heavily forested area to Ampang to mine for tin.
