Deep in the heart of fishing village Kuala Selangor, at a place called Pasir Penambang, is a one-road commercial area that houses two iron steel shops.

Both shops make high carbon steel implements for farmers and fishermen. The above pictures reveal that the worker at one of these two shops is making a knife. His is an old method, comprising a furnace, a long basin of water, a hydraulic hammer and a range of hammers and tongs.

Some of us who collect hand-forged knives sometimes journeyed to this place to buy a knife or two. The workmanship leaves a lot to be desired but we don’t mind because we know these hardworking men will have a sense of satisfaction that their handiwork has been appreciated to a certain degree.

These are the men of steel in an almost forgotten town of some backwater village of a large state that consists of long stretches of agricultural land.
