Going nuts over coconuts! May 2, 2007Posted by asianpixmen in Activities, Craft, Food, Malaysia, People, Places.
Carrefour hypermarket in Subang Jaya not so long ago had this section where one, sometimes two foreign-looking guys were hired to promote coconuts.
According to one of the chaps, the coconuts were from Thailand but their technique was apparently from Philippines. A flat grind parang is used to slice off the outer coconut skin and then when the white coconut flesh is exposed, a long flat stick which is apparently a polymer of some kind was used to “carve” out the white interior of coconut ball.
Some customers want the coconut ball intact, together with its water. The price? Only RM3.60. I have tried the special coconut twice, and it tasted great.
Half the fun is watching the guy going through the entire process of separating the coconnut flesh from its hard, fibrous outer shell.
