Handcrafted medallions for friends and loved ones May 10, 2007

There are many unheralded craftsmen of superior standards in Malaysia. Sometimes, if we are lucky, we will come across them and their wares.

Recently, on a journey beyond Selangor borders, I came across such a person. He was selling medallions of various substances (stone, metal and jade-like stones). On these medallions, he had carved phrases and words of encouragement, love and other inspirational verses.

I bought one for keepsake. It turned out to be a good buy because the recipient was thrilled by the unusual gift. It costs only RM20. The better ones cost about RM30 each.

The man spoke no English, I spoke no Mandarin, so we settled on the hokkien dialect which worked for both of us. Anyway I had him interpreted the Mandarin wording engraved on the medallion I bought from him.

It was an interesting encounter.
