Bread around the corner, breadman around the corner…. November 8, 2007Posted by asianpixmen in Activities, Culture, Food, Malaysia, People, Places.
In most towns in Malaysia, including the big ones, a vehicle like this with plastic-wrapped buns and bread hanging all around its sides can be seen.
My neighbourhood still has this roti guy who scoots around the place in the evenings, blasting his irritating horn, alerting all his customers that the breadman’s in the vicinity.
I have a soft spot for the rotiman because I grew up eating those so-called un-nutritious bread and ended up being a big, strong guy who can eat all kinds of allegedly edible junk. These days, anything that is not certified safe by a medical association is often tagged as “suspect”.
But the rotiman has, in a way, saved many a family outside the perimeters of the city boundaries. Whoever heard of High Five or Gardenia back in the 80s? Thank God for the roti guy! May he never vanish from all our neighbourhoods.
