Petaling Street, here I come! January 1, 2008Posted by asianpixmen in Activities, Craft, Culture, Malaysia, Miscellaneous, People, Places.
I fell in love with Petaling Street about 10 years ago when I was slightly short of cash and wanted to stretch the ringgit as much as possible. I had heard of talk that Petaling Street offered and still offers the best deals in town.
The answer to that is true and not-so-true. True if you know the vendors well and not-so-true if you are in a hurry and don’t know the fundamentals of Haggling 101 in a bargain-hunter’s haven like this.
The tourists just love this place. They believe it is typical of a Chinatown that they have read so much about on the Internet. Again, yes and no. Yes, there are some things that reflect life on the downtown side and no, it is not typical of a real Chinatown.
Petaling Street, I believe, grew out of a necessity to please the curious eyes and minds of a foreign visitor. Hey, why not make a buck or two, since they are all crowding around the place, someone must have said this a long time ago. And so, the place grew and grew.
Today, Petaling Street has all kinds of wares. Depending on where you go and how you bargain, you can actually have a great time!
