There was a time when a visitor attended a Malay kenduri and was entertained by Malay traditional musicians, the group would invariably consist of elderly people.

The times have changed. These days, as I have witnessed, members of the Malay traditional musical group comprised the younger set.

The group of traditional Malay istrumentalists are all men in their 20s and 30s. But together they made some fine music. It is a throwback to those days when music was the common refrain that brightened up the mood in a simple village.

I have seen and enjoyed scenes like the above in my younger days in Ipoh. We had numerous Malay celebratory occasions when people from all walks of life came together to enjoy each other’s festivals.
